Construction Glossary

Your guide to essential construction terminology, processes, and industry concepts that empower owners and developers.

Commercial construction involves specialized terminology and processes that can be confusing for property owners, developers, and stakeholders unfamiliar with the industry. Understanding key terms empowers you to participate more effectively in project decisions, communicate clearly with your contractor, and protect your interests throughout the construction lifecycle.

This glossary covers essential construction concepts — from budget planning tools like allowances and contingencies, to project execution mechanisms like change orders and schedules, to completion processes like closeout and punch lists. Whether you're evaluating a contractor, reviewing a bid, or managing an active project, these definitions will help you navigate the technical language of commercial construction with confidence.

Iron Sparrow Construction believes that educated owners make better decisions. By demystifying construction terminology, we help you understand the "why" behind our processes, ask more informed questions, and achieve better outcomes on your projects.
